Heeling

Sonofabitch my heel still hurts 5 days after running the race. What gives? I knew it would hurt immediately post-race and into Monday. But here it is Thursday and I am still feeling the pain in my heel. I don't like it!

I haven't been back on a treadmill since the race nor have I graced the streets with my running. Instead the elliptical and I are great friends. I need more workout options.

Post Mortem - 38.29

Well, I did it. It wasn't pretty but I finished and I did pretty much run the whole thing except for the two times I stopped for water and I can't run and drink. If you google my name and Norwell, MA you will find it at the Evan's Race results. I am down pretty far at number 467 out of 499. My pace was 12:22 and my overall time ended up being 38.29 which was WAY above what I had even hoped for. Though there is confusion there because I kept myself to the back of the pack since I knew the more experienced runners would be up front and I didn't cross the start line where it picks up my chip until about 30 seconds after the gun went off. My fastest time ever on the treadmill was 41 minutes and change and I found that I could run better on the ground so I think it's time for me to ditch the treadmill once the weather (ever??) turns nicer.

The end of the race was a little tough and I so wanted to walk at the end but who crosses the finish line walking after running the other 99 percent of the race? I really thought I was going to hurl though. I had to take more than a few deep breaths at the end to make sure I kept my long since eaten breakfast down there. But I was able to resume normal breathing fairly soon and return to a more normal panting and not the leavemylungontheroad type.

Overall, a great experience. A friend of mine told me last summer to find an event and train for it and it would help me with my weight loss. So I finally took the bull by the horns in about February because I knew this race was coming, I had run it three times in the past and all before kids. It's also for a cause near to my heart since I have a younger brother who is autistic. So all of my training went well and the high I feel has been great. The two things I wanted to accomplish during the race went fairly well. First, I hardly walked it though there were definitely a few shuffles here and there instead of good solid steps. Second, I wasn't the last person across the finish line. I also had a third goal of finishing before the 10K people started coming in but I didn't quite make that. I think about 5 or 6 of the fastest 10K people finished before me.

Later that day my right heel felt like it was on fire. It had flared up a few times during the training but I was able to continue to train but after the hard road surface it was VERY painful yesterday morning. Today I just have a few smart pains here and there from muscles who have long since been sleeping. It's a good pain though.

Stay tuned, I am searching for another race to keep increasing my pace. Not sure what I can find but I am thinking of the Komen Race for the Cure in September. That is always an awe inspiring race. There are women there who have battled breast cancer and survived and your heart just pours out to them with their stories of survival.

Trudging along

I am still working on my couch to 5K program. I wish I could say it's getting easier but it isn't. Some days I can do it easier than others though it it is still never easy. To get to the 5K though this week I need to get the girls to a host of places for the upcoming dance recital. We had a dress rehearsal last night and let me just say that Nicole in her little outfit may be the cutest thing I have ever seen. Aimee looks great too, but she looks all grown up where Nicole is just so tiny.

Tonight is picture night for them at the dance studio where they get to put on the recital outfits again and (gasp!) makeup. I know this piece alone makes them so excited. What little girl does not love her mom's makeup? It gives me a little bit of the chills because I always liken makeup on little girls to the mini-beauty queens you see on the E True Hollywood Story.

But tonight with their hair done, their makeup on and their beautiful recital costumes they will be professionally photographed and kept in the memory books of Recital 2011. The actual recital is on Sunday after the race. Hopefully I can walk post race into the recital instead of hobbling down the aisle of the auditorium.

Registered

It's official. I actually registered on line today for the 5K race. I sure hope it doesn't rain because that may be the one caveat in all of this. I don't run in the rain. I am surely not that die hard. But the training continues. The set back from my mom's illness is still there, I can feel I am slower and having a hard time after only a week of not working out. I am paying for it now. But at least it was for a good reason.

I just hope I finish the race before the walkers and before the 10K racers start coming through the finish line!

Wish me luck.

Side tracked

As with all of my good intentions, I got side tracked last week. My parents came home from FLA (yay! we all missed them terribly) and then my mom was admitted to the hospital the next day (boo...). My mom has never been sick like this and it was scary. I also had to do it without my brother because he was away on vacation while she was in the hospital. Right there showed me how glad I am to have two kids for when they have to visit me in a hospital.

Mom is on the road to recovery. It's slow and she is taking it as such but it was also very scary. We have some follow up appointments to got to etc. but one day at a time right now.

So what did this mean for my couch to 5K? Basically that I was put back about 2 weeks because I didn't workout or run for a week. I finally got back into gear today and hopped on the treadmill and did a 5 minute workout and then a 12 minute run. I wasn't able to hit the 20 minutes but I will take the 12 minutes. Really my overall goal is to run this race May 22nd and be able to run the whole thing without stopping. I am crossing my fingers for a cool, clear day. If it rains I am out and if it's over 80 I am out too. I am not prepared for those conditions.
