20 Minutes down....

I did it!!!! I really did it!!! I did day 3 week 5 on the treadmill. My legs are barking at me but at least I did what I set out to do. Maybe it was the excessive chocolate consumption over the past three days keeping me on a sugar high but I felt good going into it, really I did. About 15 minutes into the 20 minutes I could totally tell that I was about to hit a wall. So I watched Brian Williams on the news talk about the Royal Wedding (because all of the media is hyping it waaaay up) and I made it through. Then in a rookie mistake I slowed the treadmill down from my 5.0 mph to 3.0 mph and grabbed the handrails at which point I also hit the stop button. Oh well. I did my 3.1 miles on the treadmill even if it was broken up by my own stupidity.

But I did it. On to week 6...on Thursday. My legs already hurt from tonight's workout so I can only imagine how I will be feeling tomorrow.

Kids are in bed, stuff is ready for work tomorrow and I am off to the showers. Maybe I can do this race without stopping. Well, okay, I will need a few water breaks and I know well enough I can't run and drink.

Couch to 5K

Well, I did it. I signed up for a 5K race. I haven't done one since Nicole was about 8 months old back in 2007 and that one kept me from walking normally for about a week. I didn't do any pre-race prep and I paid for it. I have run a few 5Ks before having kids but never very swiftly and only once or twice did I actually run the whole 3.1 miles without stopping. But I am going to give it a go once again on May 22, 2011. It's a good cause local to my town it's the Evan Henry Road Race to benefit Autism. There is a 10K and a 5K and loads of walkers. This is the type of event I need....one that also has walkers so I don't feel as though I am the last one to cross the finish line.

So I started the Couch to 5K on the Cool Runnings website and was feeling great about my progress until Week 5. Day 3 of week 5 to be precise. That 20 minute jog without stopping absolutely kicks my butt every time. I can do about 14 minutes and then my little toe on my right foot starts to go numb, my thighs start to burn and I generally start to psyche myself out. I need to get over this hump to continue on with the training but for the love of God, this one workout has left me in a bit of a slump. I can do 3.1 miles so I know I can complete the distance. It's just that I want to run the whole distance and it ain't happening yet.

Of course this is all part of the never ending battle of the bulge that I have. So my attempts to keep moving are all in proportion to my efforts to take off a few pounds. But this running solely for 20 minutes after a 5 minute warm up is just not happening. I am not discouraged. Though today's workout was not happening. I think the warm weather on Easter Sunday combined with an office building that uses "green" energy practices and therefore has minimal ventilation on weekends made for a stuffy gym not conducive for this couch to 5K runner. Plus my post holiday jelly bean and chocolate egg ingestion did nothing to assist my efforts. So I banged out a mere 2.25 miles in about 35 minutes....yeah do that math....it is basically equal to turtle status.

But I will press on so stay tuned and don't forget the big event is on May 22, 2011. It's no Boston Marathon but it will be my own little accomplishment.

Still There??

woo....woo...Puff...puff.....swipe....swipe.

Just dusting it off here. Where have I been? Oh you know, life, it takes you in and makes you crazy. Lets see since last I posted we had a great Christmas, fabulous New Years, Nicole turned 4 (how did that even happen) and Aimee switched from PM to AM Kindergarten. Work has been crazy busy with wonderful new projects and we finally saw our lawn in last weeks after so many months of it being covered in white snow.

So now that things are starting to poke out I thought it was time to pick up my blog, dust it off and start fresh.

Unfortunately, the new year came in with some new health issues for me. I started with heart palpitations. Those are definitely an unnerving feeling. I wore a heart monitor for a month and had to hit a little button each time I had an "episode" of these little fluttering. Thankfully, it showed that these little times of palps as I have lovingly started to call them does nothing to my heart rate or rhythm. Apparently my heart just feels the need to throw an extra beat in there once in a while. We're still working on the why of it all.

Next, I got the news that my thyroid is basically kaput. I am on an almost total replacement dose of synthroid at this point. And for the record the endocrinologist that I met was an absolute stick in the mud. But she did prescribe an ultrasound to see where my thyroid is at this point and apparently though enlarged, the remedy for that is to keep taking my meds. I have the thought of a snarky comment here about med school and the like but I will keep it to myself.

So I continue on my path trying to self diagnose and monitoring when I feel these palps and what other symptoms I have and what it appears is that I am periomenopausal. Apparently you can be this way for a good 10 years before.

We started our garden by blocking off a portion of the yard with some wooden edges and we started some seedlings indoor for transplant after May. Now, the one problem I have is that we have seen some deer in the yard lately (inside the fence!) and the buggers have eaten some of the leaves off of my strawberry plants. I haven't seen them out there lately but some footprints out front and a few sprouting annuals are a little shorter than before. So I may have to invest in some spray to deter them.
